Find Your First Point of Resistance

I had a really lovely time today — I invited my little sister to one of my hot yoga classes. It was such a joy to have her in the room with me. She’s new to yoga, and teaching her reminded me of one of the most important lessons in this practice: encouraging people to move with love and care.

Yes, yoga asks us to challenge ourselves. To build discipline. To connect with our inner strength. But we should never push ourselves in a way that disregards what we truly need. Life outside the mat is already full of pressure, deadlines, and stress. So when we step onto the mat, it should be a different experience — one rooted in balance, intention, and kindness.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of chasing shapes or trying to achieve what we think a pose should look like. But the goal in yoga isn’t the final form. The goal is to tune inward and notice what’s happening in your body and mind as you move. It’s about finding your first point of resistance — that place where your body says, “Here’s where I need to pause” — and working gently from there.

That’s where true strength is built. Not from pushing or forcing, but from listening. From learning to meet yourself exactly where you are with compassion, patience, and curiosity.

For me, that’s what yoga is all about:
Not how far you go, but how kindly you treat yourself along the way.

If we can learn to challenge ourselves on the mat with grace and self-love, we start to carry that same energy off the mat — and that, to me, is the real magic of yoga.
